About Mindfulness and Stress Reduction

Classes are based on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) curriculum that has been helping people around the world for 40+ years.

There are 2 formats for the program. The first includes 8 sessions, 2 hours each, and one daylong retreat after the seventh class. In this time together, the participants:

♥     receive guided instruction in mindful meditation practices
♥     experience gentle stretching and mindful yoga
♥     participate in group exercises to enhance mindfulness in                 everyday
 life and communication
♥     receive materials to support ongoing practice at home                     both during and after the course

I also offer a workshop format, in which the course content is divided into three 3-hour workshops, held one month apart for 3 consecutive months.

MBSR is a time-tested program that has helped thousands of people improve the quality of their lives since it was first implemented at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979.  Today, programs based on the one developed there by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn exist throughout the world in communities and hospitals. Our program in Gettysburg is modeled on the same curriculum.

MBSR is not an alternative to traditional medical or psychological care.  With its emphasis on the mind-body connection, and its devotion to living life in the present moment, it helps us find our own inner resources for living fully.  It has value for the prevention of stress and illness, and is also a perfect complement to traditional care, helping to reduce medical symptoms and psychological distress.
